âARE YOU SICK, MATT? YOU DONâT look too good.â
I didnât feel too good.
Jeffery set the circuit board and miniature light bulbs he was carrying onto the floor outside the rec room and reached out to steady me. âDo you need help?â
Without answering, I continued to zombie-walk away from him and toward my room. I went inside, leaving the door open, and headed straight for the bed. As stiff and straight as a line segment, I fell forward onto my face.
âBro? You okay?â
âHe looked really white and sort of wobbled as he walked,â I heard Jefferyâs voice say.
âItâs okay, dude, you were right to get me.â Coopâs hand shook my shoulder. âRoll over, man. You gotta breathe.â
Remaining on my stomach, I turned my head enough to let air reach my nostrils.
âAre you going to get better in time for water jousting tonight?â asked Jeffery. âI finished making the paddles.â
âHeâs one sick dude.â
âIâll call Miss Smoot.â
âNo!â I sprang to my knees, then twisted around to face them. âShe . . . thinks Laurenâs fine.â My voice went whiny. âJust a little stress.â I punched the mattress next to my leg. âShe dragged her onto the third floor and shoved me back inside the elevator.â
âWhoa, bro, you hit your head or something?â He lifted up one of my eyelids. âYou okay in there?â
I shoved his arm away.
âMy sister, Lauren. Remember I told you about her being hereâthat I was going to see her today? She had some sort of fit in the elevator. She blacked out for a minute and went all shaky and freaky.â
âPsycho!â Coop wiggled his fingers in front of my face.
âItâs not funny! Somethingâs wrong, and Honey Lady isnât even going to call my parents.â
âHold up, bro. Honey who?â
Major foot in mouth. I was too upset to care much, though.
âNothing. Never mind. I asked Miss Smoot to call my parents, and she said they donât need to worry.â Turning, I punched the headboard this time. Pain crunched my knuckles, but I barely noticed. âMy parents need to know!â
Jeffery plopped down on the end of my bed. âYou can tell them. Send them an e-mail.â
âA lot of good that will do.â
The two of them stared at me, blankly.
âMy e-mails never get through. Miss Smoot claims thereâs a technical problem with my account, but the more I think about it, the more I think sheâs lying. Doesnât it seem weird to you? No cell phone service. The landline phones are only for in-house use. I donât know why Iâm different, but my e-mails to the outside never get answered. How do they expect us to talk to our parents?â
âMy ârents e-mail me back all the time,â said Coop. âBut youâre right, they never get around to answering my questions. They just give me boring play-by-plays of their boring lives. I think Iâm an item on their to-do lists now. They never joke or get off on weird tangents like the way they used to talk. Itâs no fun communâing with them anymore.â
Jefferyâs mouth got tight.
